Ah, the ambiance....

Today my electrician friend Dave, Traci's husband, came to do some repair work around my house for me.  Although I consider myself pretty handy around the house, I have approximately two home-repair departments into which I have vowed never to venture:  electrical and plumbing.  (I say "approximately two" because I'm sure there may be others that currently escape my mind). Dave fixed my broken garage door opener, installed new hard-wired smoke-and-carbon-monoxide detectors, and quieted a boorishly loud bathroom fan.  What a relief.  On all counts, it's just so wonderful to have nagging problems like these lifted from your shoulders, especially when the only lifting I personally had to do was to hoist a pen into my hand to write him the cheque for his time.  Such a sweet guy too, he announced he really didn't even want to take money from me since I'm a friend, but this is the guy's living and he spent five hours of his day here, not to mention driving time from Orangeville and back.  Dang straight I'm paying you! Grateful as I am for the aforementioned repairs, the job I'm most excited about is that he also installed a whole boatload of dimmers in my house.  I'm all about soothing, warm and inviting-feeling rooms these days, and there were a whole whack of lights that I felt would be much, much nicer on dimmers than on their normal, glaringly-bright traditional switches. I only made three trips to the Home Depot in the last two days, between the initial purchase, a return to get additional supplies, and a final return to exchange one type of dimmer for another.  And I even learned a bit along the way about 3-pole switches, low-voltage lighting, leads, eco-friendly dimmable light bulbs and the fact that my basement pot lights' terminals are ageing.  Not that I'd necessarily remember it all if I were quizzed on it three days from now, but hey: the momentary knowledge is empowering. As for me right now, all I can think about is that I can hardly wait till it gets dark out tonight so I can test out the new ambiance...bring on the soothing, the warm and the inviting.  Ahhhhhh.....
