How To Step Up Your Game

The NHL is back in business. Hockey fans everywhere are rejoicing.

I'm just not one of 'em.

Nevermind my opinion on the whole strike (pfffffft!!!); it's just that anyone who knows me knows that I have about as much 'team sports' experience as a thumbtack. And I'll probably be accused by raving Leaf fans of being disloyal to Canada for saying this, but to be honest thumbtacks are also what I'd rather thrust into my eyeballs than be forced to watch most sports (except maybe my son's hockey games).

Ok that's a slight exaggeration; I wouldn't intentionally thrust anything into my newly laser-vision-corrected peepers. I'm just saying that to make my point. See, I'm the kind of gal who trips over her own feet running to first base (that actually happened once…or twice. So embarrassing.) I've discovered I'm more of a yoga- and walking- kind of a gal. Sometimes a bit of tennis or skiing, depending what time of year it is here in the Great White North.

But this isn't a post about the NHL. It's not about yoga or walking or the Great White North either.

Team sports aren't my thing, but life and small business entrepreneurship? Those are my sports.

And my coaching style could be described in much the same way as that of a sports coach.

As a life- and bu

The role of a coach

siness- coach, I don't sit 'behind the bench' bursting blood vessels in my forehead as I scream at you from the sidelines, nor do I engage in the time-wasting practice of cursing the refs for crappy calls (i.e. blaming other people and circumstances for any dire straits you find yourself in). I will, however - as any good coach would - challenge you to push yourself, stretch your limits, play at your edge and give it all you've got. I'll let you rest when you're injured, yet I'll push you to come back and play when I sense that the only true remaining hurdle is helping you get over your fear of getting hurt again.

Just like in sports, a coach is not someone who will run out on the field and kick, hit, throw, volley or dodge the ball for you.  When you're working with me as your life- or business- coach, you've got to be ready to get on the field and play your hardest. You are accountable for your actions.

Think about Olympic athletes. Every single one of them has the help of a coach who's played the game, studies their sport, observes their execution and provides guidance and support to help them step up and perform at their personal best.

Clients often credit coaching with giving them greater self-confidence, lower stress levels, higher self-awareness and smarter goal setting. Those sound to me like key ingredients in any recipe for success, whether it be in life or in business.

As your coach, my role is that of your strategist, mentor, cheerleader and fans in the stands.

Because I want you to win this game.

And you can't win if you don't play. (Right, hockey fans?)
