Want to Belong? Stop Trying to Fit In.

If you’re craving better relationships, a deeper sense of belonging, or just people who truly “get you,” you’re not alone. Especially after major life transitions, we need a sense of community that makes us feel supported, safe, and that helps us mend and grow.

But even without major life changes, many of us find ourselves wanting more meaningful connections. We may have simply outgrown—or never really had—the kinds of relationships our hearts yearn for.

Here’s the tricky part: many of us end up changing bits of who we are—sometimes without even being consciously aware of it—just to be accepted. We adjust our behaviour and our choices in order to “fit in.”

Sometimes we do this with friends. Sometimes at work. And for many of us—including me—it even happens in our family of origin.

It’s a survival adaptation. Humans need social connection, and fitting in helped us stay safe when we were young. It helped us read the room, keep the peace, and get the care we needed.

But those old strategies can hold us back as adults.

And fitting in is not the same as true belonging.

True belonging happens when you can be your real, authentic self—and still feel loved, valued, and welcomed.

The benefits are huge: lower stress, higher self-worth, and more happiness, to name just a few. Healthy relationships boost your whole sense of well-being: your confidence, your energy, and ultimately, your future.

Your self-image—the way you see yourself—plays a major role here. It shapes how you connect with others, how you handle conflict, and how open you feel to new relationships. When your self-worth grows, your relationships get stronger too.

That’s why finding a community where you can be YOU matters so much. Healthy relationships don’t just help you cope; they help you rise. They help you become the best version of yourself.

Watch the Healthy Relationships episode to learn how your self-image affects your relationships, how real community boosts well-being, and why being around the right people changes everything:

In this episode, you’ll discover:

☑ how your self-image impacts your relationships

☑ how to build a strong sense of self-worth

☑ the surprising ways volunteering boosts happiness

☑ how to use social media to expand your in-person community

One trick to help you start to identify when you're adapting to 'fit in' is to notice anytime you feel small, hidden, or drained. Pay attention to who makes you feel lighter… and who drains you. We all have bad days, but if someone in your life constantly pulls you down, it’s time for better boundaries—and time to nurture other (or new) connections that lift you up.

This is the heart of what you'll find here at Dreamsmith: simple tools, real conversations, and guidance that lifts your whole life, to help you strengthen the most important relationship of all... your relationship with yourself.

Healthy relationships are possible. And they start with you. Watch now on YouTube, Apple or Spotify.
