Most people won't think twice about going to the doctor for physical things like diabetes or heart failure; but even though conversations around mental health have come a long way (which is amazing), there's still a lot of stigma—and shame—around mental health issues.
I know this all too well.
I was just six years old when my mom suffered the first of what would become a number of nervous breakdowns that continued through my university years and beyond. After struggling her entire adult life, my mom ended her quiet desperation in a tragic suicide three weeks before her 61st birthday.
It was not her first attempt.
Current statistics estimate that approximately 1 in 5 men and 1 in 4 women will struggle with mental health in their lifetime. I've certainly struggled with mine. And the World Health Organization states that "suicide is among the top 20 leading causes of death globally for all ages. Every year, nearly one million people die from suicide.”
That's why episode two of Optimal Living—"Healthy Mind"—is especially close to my heart.
It was my mom's death that prompted me to start my search for the answers, not just about how to survive through life—or worse, to suffer in the unbearable internal agonies that can lead to suicide—but to build, restore, and maintain your ability to flourish and thrive.
The good news is that our current understanding about the connections between your mind, body, emotions, spirit, and other aspects of your life is growing quickly.
