Road trip

There’s something about going on a road trip, even if it’s not going to take you very far for very long, that brings up a feeling of adventure and novelty. Tomorrow, a bunch of women friends are convening at one of the girls’ houses in St. Catharine’s. From there we’re all heading out for manicures and/or pedicures, then back to her house for hanging out (maybe some shopping?), a quasi-potluck lasagna dinner, then out to a bar for some dancing. I don’t even feel like going to bars these days, but I’m definitely outnumbered in this instance so I’m going to have to just go with the flow. If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em. But there’s something about packing your overnight bag and your pillow, rolling up a sleeping bag and hopping on the highway that brings me a feeling of fun, adventure and freedom. Hitting the open road and taking off, even for only one night, to a different town with a different group of friends makes me feel just a little more alive somehow. Breaking out of routine does that, I suppose. Of the approximate ten women going this weekend, I only know five of them (I’m number six), and of those five, I only know two particularly well. So there’s also that sense of interest in wondering who you’re about to spend twenty-four hours with: what kind of personalities you’ll encounter, the dynamic of the group’s interactions, and just what will play out over the course of our time together. There’s even the anticipation of the relatively mundane exercise of stopping off at Tim Horton’s before we hit the highway. Must have coffee in paper cups for a road trip. The eco-friendly tree-hugger in me cringes ever so slightly at the paper cup reference, but alas, history is where memories are made, and the historic use of paper coffee cups is forever etched in my mind as part of the road-trip coffee experience. So tomorrow I’ll get up earlier than I normally would on a Saturday morning, pack my bags, and hop into my friend’s minivan for a day out of town, a night on the town and a step out of the ordinary. Road trips rule! And of course, Road Trip Rules will apply...but that’s a different story. :-)
